I love the ones that connect to mushrooms that highlight the way different parts of the mushroom communicate as a whole, Jacqueline Rendell.
I think that’s cool and a positive thing to express to people to spark their imaginations, especially on ways to utilize that technology or its metaphor to improve our lives.
But the one that Michael Newberry posted, I have a love/hate relationship with.
It disgusts me, but because it is emotionally evocative regarding something important, I appreciate it.
The analogy it’s making regarding the worst case scenario of what has become a false human condition is apparent, and the way it mops up its own “blood” until it “dies” serves as a dire warning regarding how not to live, how not to be a machine winding itself down until it dies.
If taken in that context, I support the message as a wake up call.
But it’s not something I would want in my house or my collection unless I were particularly obsessed with contemplations of memento mori.
For anyone who is and who wants to surround themselves with dire reminders to seize every moment, I could see wanting it.
But personally, I would find the constant reminder rather depressing, especially knowing how many people in this world are risk averse to taking decisive action on what they really want, instead mechanically grinding themselves down on everything they don’t want, day in and day out, convincing themselves it’s what they are supposed to do, and continuing to do it until it’s too late.
