Louder for the people in the back!

I love the exchange about performative intellectualism—especially about how curiosity doesn’t kill the cat. It used to be a way to shame wonder. So curiosity doesn’t kill my cat, only other people’s cats? Perhaps I should change my bio to reflect this newfound wisdom.

Y’all are my people.

Just another non-cop saying "tech bros" for the benefit of the censorious Hamish McKenzie.

The phrase "the creeps" entered the English language by way of Charles Dickens in the novel _David Copperfield_ and the word itself comes to us through Olde English "crēopan" which refers to a creeping motion or a slow crawl. The Oldesters brought it into English from the proto-German sorts who had this word "kreupaną" to refer to a sort of twisting and crawling. Probably one needed to creep into caves in northern Europe because reasons. For the same reason that one would crawl along the ground or into a tight space, out of a fear of being seen or getting caught by the guards trying to keep you from getting to the food in the warehouse, "the creeps" suggests a feeling of scariness that motivates a creeping movement.

Americans don't always understand how other people treat "ch" in various contexts. So, skeevy is our way of updating the Italian "schifo" so we don't have to tell people "ch" like in chaos not ch like in chair, mmmkay? Schifo means disgusting or the emotion of disgust itself, because Italians are extra effective at word use that way. Obviously it all has to do with 19th Century open borders when Italians and Irish and other people from various parts of Europe were free to enter the country but "need not apply" for work at certain places. Because creepy and skeevy and also tech bros.
