Memelords, Scrollars, and Shenanigators… OH MY!
Reading Levels Explained
Sometimes people forget this or they haven’t thought of the world in quite these terms before, so it’s something I feel we all need to be reminded about periodically, purely to retain an operable sense of perspective:
By definition, roughly HALF of the population of the world has an IQ of less than 100 because we use 100 to set the bell curve.
Statsically speaking, this means only roughly 2.1% of people in this world have an IQ greater than 130.
Most of the people utilizing Substack on a daily basis, I would venture to guess, have an IQ greater than 130.
Gauging by writing styles and ability to deduce and make strong inferences, this seems true, give or take. I could be off, but it’s a decent working theory.
Given that, there is a chasm that would need to be bridged to achieve a level of understanding across these disparate levels of comprehension.
The words I am using to describe the issue, even within the sentences I am writing right now, would not be understood by the majority of humanity.
It boils down to issues with ineffective communication.
It takes a true genius to simplify advanced concepts so that literally anyone could understand them.
And where does that leave a writer when the writer wants to play with language to the greatest of their ability for their own amusement?
At what point do we decide that having others understand what we are saying is crucial, and at what point do we say the art form of the word does not need to appropriately communicate anything when, ultimately, fostering some level of communication of ideas is the entire point of utilizing the written word as a preferred communication tool?
Where do we draw the line, strike a balance, decide to only cater to one type of audience?
Is simplifying language really selling out or is the art form of being widely understood something that is completely underrated?
There are no right or wrong answers there.
Just different ways of looking at it, of flipping it around like a Rubik’s cube and trying to make some sense of it, and all of the ways we see it will be colored by our own lenses, our own upbringings, what we were taught to value, and in what ways we have chosen to rebel against what we were taught.
Just like most modern art, we might find it amusing to do an installation where emergency signage is written in iambic pentameter… but only five people would get it or care.
And it seems like that would be a secondary commentary also worth making, that only two of those initial five might understand the joke is on them, with the other three acting smug that they got the first half of the joke without understanding the rest.
But if social commentary falls in the forest and there is no one there who understands it, did it ever make a noise?
When Art Meets Physics and Engineering….
