Adventures in Algorithmlandia: Who Has The Map?!
Something non-obvious if you’re coming into this plarform as someone with a purely Notes based audience that should be taken into account when comparing with people who entered with an email following already intact:
This part I quoted below can’t possibly be true because email based subscribers do not necessarily have Substack Notes accounts and therefore cannot utilize the engagement tools.
While half of my people came over with me, the other half found me here.
The half who found me here are the ones I see liking posts, which makes sense - my email users do not have accounts here and likely see zero utility in “liking” my articles, let alone the fact that they cannot do so without an account.
So if you compare my posts to people whose audiences have been generated purely with Substack Notes, you will see a massive difference in “engagement” - because Notes users know and use and have access to those tools while email based subscribers without Notes accounts do not.
Yet, I receive notifications often that my posts receive very high traffic.
The “engagement” numbers are not going to reflect that for me because my figures show that my people are predominantly email based users who don’t use Notes.
Most of them, when they reach out to me, tell me they are finding the interaction on Notes confusing to use and are finding it very difficult to follow the conversational threads so they remain subscribed to me over email but do not engage on the platform.
When I hear from them, they reach out to me over email or on the platforms they are more comfortable using.
So, despite mainly living here, I have needed to maintain my presence on many other platforms as well to be sure that my people can find and interact with me.
Memelords, Shenanigators, and Scrollars… OH MY!

Thanks for the recap here. I'm new to Substack but already learned that when on the Home tab, I only look at "Following"
The only other social media I'm really active on is LinkedIn (strictly for work purposes). It's been around plenty longer than Substack and everyone there will tell you the feed is completely useless.
The way I "follow" people is by going to their profile, going to their history of posts, and bookmarking that in my browser.
I don't know why social media platforms are so bad at making a feed anyone likes but... don't expect it to get better any time soon.
Hi. I can’t find any way to ‘subscribe’ to your Notes, but any screen I look at your site or newsletter on, using the iPhone app, shows ‘subscribed’. I believe whatever SS did when they moved “following/explore” from the top of the notes to the top of the page sent stuff wonky. I see more of who I follow and subscribe to if I’m not on ‘following’. Tech with SS’s stated purpose should be MUCH MUCH MUCH more intuitive than it is.
