One of your messages today really hit home with me. Where it says “In your journey there will be ‘in between times’ of transition.”

I got this message Thursday morning from his hospice nurse:

Hi Tom.

I just saw Mr Seward, and he is declining as I'm sure you know. I don't have a timeline, but I do believe he is transitioning. Some things we look at are blood pressure and heart rate, which are actually pretty stable for him right now. He isn't waking up for care and hasn't been given much in the way of the comfort medications as he is resting comfortably. I think he had one dose of morphine and lorazepam this morning and once yesterday if I looked at that correctly. So now that he isn't swallowing we will stop his routine medications and he will get only the comfort medications. Everyone is keeping a good eye on him.

My dad has been in a dementia care center since May. He passed away Friday morning, so the transition is complete. Me and my wife left our life, home, kids, and grandkids in Utah 2 years ago to come care for him in his home in Texas. It’s been a labor of love that I wouldn’t change even if I could. We took daddy to Cirque du Soleil, rodeos, and even to his 70th high school reunion 1,500 miles away in his hometown in Delaware.

Monday, this 3-war retired Marine will be escorted by the Patriot Guard Riders to the DFW National Cemetery, where he’ll be buried with my mom, who’s been waiting for him for the past 8 years. His transition is complete, ours is just beginning.
