Old world buildings usually have spires on top made out of conductive materials. In many of these setups, we can tell that there was an object inside the structure below the spire which has been removed. However, there are many old photographs in which we can still see the parts of these structures that were subsequently removed. The spires are almost always present, so this tells us that they likely had some sort of structural purpose and functionality and were not merely decorative or aesthetic.
