The song that comes to my mind often these days as the middle class is being systematically wiped out is George Michael’s Praying for Time. “These are the days of the beggars and the choosers”. I’m not going to put this forth as some big testament to what a “good person” I am, because I’m not, but I cannot believe how many people walk by all of the homeless people in my town. I’ve brought food and blankets to women sleeping on the street benches directly outside of restaurants and watched as people walked by as though they were invisible. It is surreal. One thing is for sure, I cannot ever unsee it and go back to who I used to be. I used to see the clear delineation between the wealthy and the poor in other countries. I see it here in the US now.
