Notes On Atlas Letting Go, Amazing Stories, The List, Cheese, Black Pills, The Dark Night Of The Soul, Success Stories, Family Trees, Goblin Hickeys, Lobsterman Gets Newmannoyed, and more....
Always a pleasure to get a mentioned on the scroll (and to see what I've been rambling on about). As long as it made someone think and/or smile then job done :-0
Demi, you're the best! Thanks for always including me in The Scroll. After reading all the cheese posts, I can't believe someone didn't post Tim Minchin's song
Reading all the comments about how to "make it" on Substack got me going. I started from scratch as a part-time poet, posting my poems and older poems to see if anyone would care/notice. I don't expect to make any money off this as a poet because 1) I know of no one who would pay for a subscription to my type of work and 2) I'm not one of those IG poets who crank out one liners or talk about the minutiae of their existence and call it "poetry". When I actually have something to sell, like a book, then I'll let the world know and go from there.
Sure I'd love to be a full-time poet, but many artists/writers have to hold day jobs in order to keep the roof over the head, and food on the table, yes? Nothing wrong with that. We do what we can with what we have. I--and I'm sure many others--are in no way privileged or come from wealthy backgrounds which would allow us to live independently while pursuing our craft(s).
IMO celebrities are ruining Substack when they migrate to the platform because they not only come with a huge fan base, they make the rest of us think we can enjoy the same instant success they have. Also, they're most often narrative pushers that poison the well (as it were); they don't have a unique voice, a voice that countermands the status quo. THEY ARE THE STATUS QUO, and that, if anything, is NOT what Substack is about, at least not to me. Please correct me if I'm wrong...
We're all about Free Speech on this platform and I'm sure there'll come a day when one of these celebs are going to complain about it. They can have their own opinions, sure, I don't care; but I don't want to run the risk of getting cancelled b/c of something I say/think/believe in the free marketplace of ideas.
It's all about freedom of expression and the freedom to build communities around one's creative work.
I just had to jump in after endless scrolling thru the Jim Acosta instant success saga and say the problem is in how success and a golden age is defined. Hamishβs tweet is an old and tired model of success as is the focus of smaller substacks now βsuccessful.β BASED ON MONEY. What if Substack turned all that on its head and featured truly interesting, off the beaten (to death) path, and defined success as A CREATOR ECONOMY meaning actual creation as the currency versus paid subscribers?
Oh and I saw my name pop up in the scroll where I commented this is just like Las Vegas. Yep. The same old LIMP CARROTS.
Cheese, flowers and the mystery of a woman. As it was explained to me once long ago: you must see her, know her, listen to her and keep her safe. Do that and she will make you feel like a king. Enough said.
Lots of emotional intensity in the batch today. As always, thanks π
Thanks again for the beautiful flowers! ππ
