Grocery store in a socialist country: that's pretty much how the shelves looked like back in the 80s in Romania. I went on a tour there with a dance group from Hungary which was much better off (still, we only had bananas and oranges once a year in my town, for Christmas, and people would stand in the line in the night, so that they could buy some in the morning) - so, in Romania, whenever we stopped with te bus, kids and women would run to us, begging and they wanted to buy EVERYTHING we had: soap, deodorant, even if we had used them...
It boggles my mind that, when people have fled here from communist and socialist countries and tell stories like this about their experiences, anyone ever could justify wanting to entertain altering society in order to live this way.
And I could continue with a list: I remember it was a big deal when we could buy a second type of bread in the shop for the first time...
My childhood was in the goulash communism, which meant a higher standard of living than the rest of the Eastern block, but my Mom tells me stories about from the 50s, the hardest Communist era in Hungary: when my poor Grandma killed a pig so that the 8 kids would have food in the winter, the police (or whatever authority of that time) came to confiscate it, she said: "Take it - but take the children too and feed them." She was left alone afterwards, but not many family had such a luck.

The media in any form has always been a psychological parade bent upon shaping opinions, thoughts and even deeds.

I still say “The Newsies” nailed it with their line:
“If I hate the headlines
I’ll make up the headline,
And I’ll say anything I hafta.”
Sounds about right.
