You’ve had this happen. You meet someone, they say maybe three words, and something in you says NO before you have any reason for it. So you talk yourself out of it, because you couldn’t point to a clear cut reason - and yet, six months later, you end up having every reason in the world for feeling the way you felt on hello.
I found a sentence in the Monroe Institute’s own archive last month that explains where that first NO came from, and why it was right. Once you know it, I think you’ll stop arguing with yourself when you feel it.
Learning to trust that first NO is exactly what I teach in Starfire Signals.
The sentence is in a history of the Institute that Bob Monroe wrote himself, around 1979, before the place even had the name it has now. In it, he’s describing three kinds of learning. The first is the ordinary kind, where you pay attention and you remember. The second is rote. The third he calls “Type III,” and he describes it like this: “All five physical senses perceive information, only a small portion (less than 20%) of which is ordinarily available to the conscious mind. Yet such information is stored in memory in the most minute detail. It is not a part of the average consciousness because there is no focus of attention on the experience at that particular moment.”
So, that conversation that you only slightly overheard two tables down while you were in the middle of your own conversation is stored in there, and so is the face of some stranger you only halfway saw across a whole parking lot. But you have all of this captured in detail. It’s not a summary. You never lost any of it. Your attention was just somewhere else whenever it was that the information came in, so the information got filed somewhere else you can’t quite reach - on purpose.
Then he gives an example that I think about a lot. A man who has never been afraid of snakes dreams that he’s wading in a creek, gets bitten, and gets sick. When he wakes up, he’s afraid of snakes - and, oddly, of creeks - “though the entire dream experience is not a part of his conscious memory.” Monroe’s point is that this kind of learning “acts upon the individual personality with the same strength” as the learning you do remember. It’s steering you, but you never see the hand on the wheel.
UPCOMING WORKSHOPS:
Shift Your Timeline - Live on Zoom
Dates:
Sunday, November 29, 10AM to 7PM Eastern
Sunday, December 20, 10AM to 7PM Eastern
In this one-day live workshop, the audio guides your body into deep stillness while your mind stays fully awake and alert, opening you into a state of expanded consciousness. Then, we move into a state outside of time. While you’re in that state, you focus on embodying the life you want instead of the one you’re currently headed toward. The idea is that choosing it clearly, in that state, makes it more likely to happen.
Starfire Signals - Live on Zoom
Dates:
Tuesday, November 3, 10 AM to Noon Eastern
Monday, November 30, 8 PM to 10 PM Eastern
Tuesday, December 8, 10 AM to Noon Eastern
Monday, December 28, 8 PM to 10 PM Eastern
In this bimonthly live class, the audio settles your body into deep rest while keeping your mind fully alert, opening the door to expanded consciousness. In that relaxed state, you practice noticing what your intuition is telling you, and writing it down before you second-guess it. Over time, that makes it easier to trust what you’re sensing and helps you to tap into your own guidance on command.
Starfire Spark - Live on Zoom
Dates:
Thursday, November 19, 8:30 PM to 10:30 PM Eastern
Thursday, December 17, 8:30 PM to 10:30 PM Eastern
In this monthly live class, you listen to special audio that helps your body relax deeply while your mind is still wide awake, tapping into expanded consciousness. Then, still on the call, you make something — a timed sprint where you write, play, or create without stopping to judge it. Some meetings, you’ll share one small piece of what you made with the group. Most meetings, you leave with something new that didn’t exist before class started.
So if that’s true, what is a gut feeling? I think it’s that other 80 percent reporting in. You meet someone, and something in you says NO before they’ve even finished their first sentence. You didn’t make that up. Somewhere in all of that stored detail, a pattern matched, and the match showed up as a feeling, because that small feeling in the background was the only way it had to reach you. It feels vague, but the information isn’t vague at all. It’s exact. The channel it comes through is just narrow.
Ten years after Monroe wrote that, the Institute put out a bulletin about a tape called Imprint, built on the same idea, and the writer summed up the problem in one line: “Whether through cultural conditioning, habitual disuse, or self-limiting concepts, we have closed off our access to the boundless potential of our brain to provide us with memory information.” Habitual disuse. When we stop practicing, the door gets stuck.
That’s why Starfire Signals exists. The class is practice at opening that door on purpose. If you haven’t heard of Hemi-Sync before, it combines an audio technique called binaural beats, in which you are played a slightly different tone in each ear and your brain reconciles these by producing a third tone which is the difference between the two, with other brainwave altering frequencies and tones layered in, to shift you into a state of synchronization between the hemispheres of your brain. This induces a calm, open, focused state from which you can access expanded awareness. Your body goes into deep rest, and your mind stays awake. In that state, the chatter quiets down, and all of that stored detail has room to come forward. You write down what comes through before your reasoning has a chance to argue with it, and then we compare notes as a group - which is the fastest way I know for you to learn what your own signal sounds like.
Channeled messages posts go out to paid subscribers every day. Tarot, shufflemancy, numerology, runes, and meditation applied to the specific energies of the day, delivered directly to your inbox.
You don’t need any experience with meditation or with Monroe’s work. You just need stereo headphones and a quiet place, and every session stands on its own.
If you want to start before class, try this for a month. The next time a NO shows up before you have a reason for it, write it down with the time and what was going on, and don’t act on it either way. In a couple of weeks, go back and reread your notes. I’d bet you’ll find that the NO had a reason after all, and that the part of you that files everything away knew it first. Doing that for a month is how you start trusting the signal you’ve received from your own intuition before the self-argument starts.
If you’ve spent years overriding that first NO, two hours of practice is a good place to start trusting it instead. The next class is this Tuesday, November 3, 10 AM to noon Eastern, live on Zoom. A session is $22. Click here to reserve your spot:
