I have been doing numerology readings long enough to know that most people come in skeptical and leave wondering why they don’t consult it more often. Not because it tells you what is going to happen, but because it tells you what the available energy supports and what it resists, and once you understand that, a lot of things that felt like personal failure turn out to have been something more like trying to swim against a current that was running in the other direction.

Here is the math.

Add the digits of the current year: 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1.

We are in a 1 universal year. In the Pythagorean tradition, which underlies most contemporary numerology, the number 1 is initiation. What was completed in 2025, a 9 year, is done. What 2026 is offering is beginning.

Your personal year is calculated by adding your birth month and birth day to the current calendar year, then reducing.

Born April 17: 4 + 1 + 7 + 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 22, then 2 + 2 = 4.

Born October 3: 1 + 0 + 0 + 3 + 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 14, then 1 + 4 = 5.

The personal year runs from your birthday to your next birthday, not January to January.

Each number describes the energy the current cycle supports.

A 4 year is for building foundations, which means visible progress is slow because the structural work is underground and the foundation is what the next decade stands on.

A 5 year is movement and change, what held still in the 4 is now free to move.

A 9 year is completion, which means launching something major in a 9 year is working against the current, and working against a current is not failure. It is just expensive.

The place where your personal year and the universal year interact tells you where your individual trajectory stacks up inside the larger pattern.

A person in a personal 1 during a universal 1 year has the maximum available initiation energy. This would be two beginnings aligning.

A person in a personal 9 during a Universal 1 is finishing something while the world around them starts fresh, which has its own specific texture.

Neither is better. Both are just ways to see the information and then adjust to it.

Keep in mind that none of this overrides choice. Numerology just describes the current of the river and the direction the river is running. You decide for yourself whether to get in the water.

The Part-Time Job You Never Applied For

Forty minutes. Gone.

You picked up your phone to check one thing. You are not sure what you looked at. You do not feel better for having looked at it. You put the phone down and picked it back up again before you even registered doing it. Then you looked at the time and felt that specific, vaguely shameful confusion of someone who cannot account for where the last forty minutes went.

The product was working exactly as designed.

You are working a part-time job you never applied for. You did not interview. You were never hired. You receive nothing for the hours you are putting in. And the time you spend is monetarily benefiting someone whose name you do not even know.

The platforms sell your attention to advertisers. You are the inventory. Your time, your focus, and the emotional states that keep you glued to the screen are the product being moved.

The previous articles in this series (1, 2, 3, 4) covered how platforms control what you see, how individual users get shadowbanned into silence, and how data brokers build profiles on you and sell them to anyone with a budget. This one covers what the system is extracting from you personally, in real time, every single day, and what you can do to stop the bleeding.

How the Machine Was Built to Hook You

These platforms were designed to be addictive on purpose. Engagement is the metric that drives advertising revenue, and engagement is maximized by keeping you on the platform as long as possible in the most activated emotional state possible. Someone made a series of deliberate engineering decisions to produce that outcome, and those decisions were made with a quarterly earnings report in mind. Ultimately, your well-being was a variable that did not make it onto the spreadsheet.

This mechanism borrowed most heavily from casino design. The system is employing variable reward schedules—the same psychological engine that makes slot machines so effective. You do not know if the next scroll will bring something interesting or nothing. That uncertainty is what keeps you pulling the lever.

The platforms know this. They studied it, optimized for it, and built it into the product architecture so thoroughly that you would have to be actively and deliberately resisting it to come out unaffected. Most people are doing neither.

Content that triggers anger, fear, and moral indignation generates more engagement than content that generates calm or satisfaction. The algorithm learns this within minutes of watching you interact and serves you more of the triggering content because this kind of activating content keeps you on the platform longer. Your nervous system is the mechanism being monetized here. The outrage, the anxiety, the doomscrolling loop at midnight—these are the product. That is what is being sold to the advertisers who are paying for access to your eyeballs.

Infinite scroll and autoplay exist for the same reason. A book has chapters. A television show has credits. A social media feed has neither, because a stopping point would end the session, and ending the session leaves money on the table. The absence of a natural stopping point is a design choice, made by a room full of people who do not have your best interests in mind and never did. They have discussed this in public, with what occasionally sounds like mild regret, which in the tech industry passes for some kind of sad attempt at an apology.

Every notification ping is a variable reward trigger. The red numerical badge on the app icon is borrowed directly from casino floor psychology. These are documented design choices that drive engagement. The people who made these decisions have described the process in interviews. Some of them no longer let their own children use the products they themselves built. You can file that under “information worth having.”

What It Is Actually Costing You

The average person now spends somewhere between four and seven hours per day on algorithmically curated feeds. That is a part-time job. That is more time than most people spend exercising, reading, or talking to people they actually like in a given week. The question worth asking is whether you are getting part-time job compensation for it, or whether someone else is. (Someone else is getting it. Just to close the loop on that.)

Your time is the obvious cost. The less obvious cost is what that time is buying.

Extended exposure to high-frequency content-switching trains the brain to expect constant novelty and makes sustained focus increasingly difficult. The capacity for deep thinking is a skill that requires practice, and the feed is specifically engineered to prevent this practice. Every time you feel the pull to check your phone in the middle of a thought, the product is doing what it was designed to do. The return on that investment goes to the platform.

When the content you consume is optimized for outrage and anxiety, outrage and anxiety become your emotional baseline. That is the product’s side effect gradually becoming your personality. There is a version of you that existed before algorithmic content optimization who was probably somewhat calmer and harder to manipulate. That version generated less engagement, so the platform has been systematically nudging you away from your old self in favor of the version of you that makes it more money.

And then there is the overall cognitive cost that connects directly back to everything the previous articles in this series covered. The platforms are degrading the cognitive infrastructure you need in order to think independently. A mind that is constantly consuming has much less capacity to think. When the feed provides ready-made opinions on every topic at high volume, forming your own requires swimming upstream against a very strong current. Most people stop swimming. The algorithmic silo keeps you contained. The attention harvest keeps you too depleted to notice the walls.

Why People Think They Cannot Stop

“Everyone I know is on there.”

The network effect is real, and it is the primary reason people stay. But scrolling past someone’s highlight reel in a feed engineered to maximize your inadequacy is a different activity than actually connecting with the people you care about, and the platform benefits enormously when you treat those two things as interchangeable. The people you actually want to talk to have phone numbers.

“I use it for my business.”

The business use is real, and it is the justification that keeps the app on the phone. But logging in with a specific task, completing it, and logging out is a different activity than passively consuming an algorithmically curated feed for four hours, and the platform benefits enormously from you treating those two things as interchangeable. The app is the same. The activity is not.

“I have tried cutting down, but I always go back.”

The difficulty is real, and it is also the point. The platform has entire teams of engineers whose only job is to make sure you come back, and their performance reviews depend on your return. There is a line item in their budget specifically for your relapse. That is the level of institutional investment working against your good intentions. It is not a fair fight, and they knew that when they drew up the budget.

“It is not that bad.”

Four to seven hours a day is a part-time job, and it is the primary reason people stay. But spending that much time on something by compulsion is a different experience than spending it by choice, and the platform benefits enormously from you treating those two things as interchangeable. Most people, when they actually sit with the number, find the accounting uncomfortable. That discomfort you feel when you acknowledge that loss of time and agency shows you that, yes, it is, in fact, that bad.

Time Sovereignty: Taking Back the Resource

You can make more money. You cannot make more time. This makes time the one genuinely non-renewable resource in your possession, which makes the attention economy’s business model the most quietly aggressive extraction operation running in your daily life. The good news is that you can renegotiate the terms, and you can start doing it today without anyone’s permission.

Treat your attention as a budget rather than a mood. Decide in advance how much of it you are allocating to which platforms for what purpose, and treat unplanned consumption as an unauthorized withdrawal. You would notice if someone reached into your wallet without asking. The extraction of your attention deserves at least that level of awareness.

Build structural barriers rather than willpower barriers. Delete the apps from your phone and use the browser versions instead. The added friction of having to go to your computer, navigate to a browser, and wait for the page to load will help break the pattern of compulsive platform and phone checking. You are removing the frictionless path to that compulsion, which is exactly where the time extraction is happening.

Turn off every non-essential notification. Every notification is a bid for your attention, arriving on someone else’s schedule. Accepting it reactively means living reactively, which is exactly the relationship with your own time that the platforms have been designed to cultivate. Notifications from people who matter to you directly are a different category. Everything else is the product trying to pull you back in. You are allowed to decline that.

Use app timers with locked settings. Most phones have screen-time controls that can be locked with a separate passcode. Set the limit when you are clear-headed and lock it so you cannot override it in the moment when your judgment is most compromised, which is precisely the moment the platform is banking on.

Swap the feed for formats that come with a built-in stopping point. A book ends. A podcast episode ends. A newsletter lands in your inbox on a schedule you agreed to, and then it is done. A long-form article saved to a read-later app gets read when you decide to read it, not when the feed decides to surface it. The algorithm has no jurisdiction over any of these formats. Swapping out the feed for any of these options is the structural equivalent of leaving the casino and going to the library, where nobody has engineered the lighting to make you lose track of time, and the exits are clearly marked.

Conduct a weekly time audit. Most phones will show you exactly how much time you have spent on each app in the previous week. Look at the number. Assign it a dollar value using your hourly rate. Decide if you got that much value back. Do this once, and you will find the exercise so clarifying that you will want to do it every week.

Create physical distance. Charge your phone outside your bedroom. Leave it in the car during meals. Put it in a drawer for the first hour of the morning. Invest in a portable Faraday bag to keep your phone in when you’re not using it. The compulsive reach is partly habitual and partly proximity-based, and physical distance interrupts both without requiring you to be heroically disciplined.

The Inventory That Walked Out

They built the machine to run on your attention. The entire revenue model depends on a continuous, largely passive supply of it. The moment you start treating your attention as a resource you own and allocate deliberately, you stop being the kind of inventory the model was built for. You become a harder target, and harder targets are less profitable. One person making this shift does not crash the system. Enough people making this shift changes the incentives, which changes the design, which changes the product. It has happened before with other industries, and it will happen here.

You have been working a part-time job you never applied for, for an employer you never chose, in exchange for a product specifically designed to make you want more of it. The resignation letter writes itself. Your attention is yours. Spend it accordingly.

I want to tell you something about synchronicity that the pop-psych version leaves out. Pop-psych has done this concept a massive disservice.

Most people encounter synchronicity as a vague reassurance in which the universe is sending you signs and you are supposed to pay attention to the signs. And this is fine as far as it goes, but it skips the part where Carl Jung spent twenty years documenting specific cases, developing a rigorous theoretical framework, and collaborating with Wolfgang Pauli, a Nobel Prize-winning quantum physicist, to work out the mechanics.

Pauli was not a spiritual hobbyist. He was one of the architects of quantum mechanics. He came to Jung because his own dreams were producing imagery he could not explain from inside physics, and the collaboration that resulted produced one of the more unusual joint publications in the history of either field.

Jung’s formal definition of synchronicity: a meaningful coincidence between a psychic state and an external event, where no causal connection exists but the correspondence is too specific to be random.

He documented hundreds of cases. The fish synchronicities alone - a sequence in which fish appeared in conversation, in reading material, in the physical environment, and in a patient’s dream across a single day - ran to the point where Jung started tabulating them.

His point was not that something magical was happening. His point was that the psyche and the external world are not as separate as the standard model assumes, and that the communication between them has a structure that is legible if you know how to read it.

Pauli’s argument, developed across their correspondence with Jung, was that quantum mechanics had already undermined the assumption of a clean divide between observer and observed. Synchronicity was not a violation of causality. It was an organizing principle running alongside it, connecting events through meaning rather than through cause and effect.

What this means in a practical sense is that the meaningful coincidences you notice are neither noise nor wishful thinking. They are the psyche communicating through whatever the external world has on hand.

I was inspired by a conversation with the lovely to move forward on creating this piece. If you have been following my coverage over the years, you already know I pull from a deep research stack. This post is intended for the readers who, over the years, have asked me for access to the full shelf.

In 2011, a team at Bayer AG attempted to reproduce the findings of 67 published cancer biology studies that their drug development work depended on. They could reproduce fewer than 25%.

In 2012, a similar effort by Amgen scientists targeting 53 landmark oncology studies replicated 6 of them. John Ioannidis at Stanford published the paper “Why Most Published Research Findings Are False” in 2005, and the citation count now exceeds 7,000 - not because scientists disagreed with it, but because they agreed with it enough to keep citing it. The reproducibility crisis is not some fringe claim. It is a technical consensus about the state of the technical literature.

The standard response is that this is a failure of incentive structures like publish-or-perish culture, underpowered studies, p-hacking, or selective reporting. All of which are real and documented. But there is a more interesting question beneath this diagnosis. If those are the mechanisms that explain why the literature fails to replicate, what does it mean that one research program kept replicating across decades, across independent labs, across methodological variations… and was still terminated?

The Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research laboratory was founded in 1979 by Robert Jahn, Dean of Engineering at Princeton. Brenda Dunne served as the laboratory manager. The PEAR Lab’s research program investigated a single question for 28 years - does human consciousness interact with random physical systems at a statistically significant rate? The methodology was rigorous. The random event generators were calibrated and independently audited. The data was accumulated across 2.5 million individual trials. The effect was small by most physical standards - on the order of one part in ten thousand. It was also consistent, replicable across independent operators and across different random event generator designs, and statistically significant at levels that would be considered definitive in any clinical drug trial.

The PEAR Lab closed in 2007. Jahn said, in an interview afterward, that the scientific community had decided not to engage with the data. Several major journals had returned papers without review. The response from establishment physics was not to attempt replication, which would have been the scientific response, but to decline participation in the conversation.

This is a distinct pattern from the general reproducibility crisis. In that crisis, results fail to hold up when repeated. In the PEAR case, the results held up repeatedly and the field declined to repeat them. The scientific consensus that dismissed the work was not based on failed replication. It was based on prior assumptions, that effects of this kind cannot exist, therefore results of this kind cannot be valid. The evidence was filtered at the model level before it reached the data level.

This is worth calling out directly because it exemplifies the filter that has been running on a very large category of human experience for a very long time. The evidence for this is documented, replicated, and archived. The decision not to include it in the official account was institutional, not empirical.

In the early 1990s, Antonio Damasio was a neurologist at the University of Iowa studying a specific and puzzling class of patients. They had sustained damage to the ventromedial prefrontal cortex - a region of the brain associated with emotional processing - through stroke, tumor, or injury. Their analytical faculties were completely intact. IQ, memory, language, logical reasoning: all unaffected. On every standard cognitive measure, these patients were normal.

Their lives were not normal. In the years following their injuries, they made a consistent pattern of catastrophically poor decisions - in careers, in relationships, in finances. Not occasionally. Systematically. A patient who had been a competent, successful professional before the injury would, post-injury, be unable to hold a job, unable to maintain stable relationships, unable to make and stick to basic plans. And they could explain, with full analytical fluency, exactly why the decisions they had just made were bad ones.

Damasio’s hypothesis, developed across two decades of clinical observation and published in the 1994 book Descartes’ Error, was this: The emotional processing regions of the brain do not interfere with rational decision-making. They are a required component of it. When the emotional signal is absent, the analytical layer generates endless equivalent options with no mechanism for choosing between them. The patient gets stuck in infinite loops of analysis because analysis alone has no closing mechanism.

The Iowa Gambling Task made this visible in the lab. Subjects played a card game rigged so that two decks were disadvantageous over time and two were favorable. Normal subjects, before they could consciously articulate why, showed stress responses (measurable skin conductance responses) when reaching toward the bad decks. The emotional system flagged the pattern before the analytical system identified it. Patients with vmPFC damage showed no stress response. They kept reaching for the bad decks and continued to lose, even after they could verbally explain which decks were problematic.

The practical implication is not that emotion should override analysis. It is that body-level signal is a data source the analytical layer cannot replicate and cannot compensate for when it is absent or suppressed. The person doing endless career analysis - pros-and-cons lists that lead nowhere, options that look equivalent, the inability to commit to a direction that keeps returning to the starting position - is not failing at thinking. The analytical layer is running correctly and producing exactly what it produces when the somatic signal is not getting through - many options with no mechanism for processing and making a suitable choice based on how it feels.

Uranus entered Gemini on July 7, 2025, for the first time since 1941. It will remain there until 2033. Eight years. And the effects are not subtle if you know what to look for.

Uranus rules disruption, electricity, and the sudden break from the established pattern. Gemini rules communication, information, the nervous system, and the faculty of discernment, the mind’s ability to sort signal from noise. When these two energies combine, the result is not merely change in the external communication landscape. It is more like a rewiring that is happening at the level of perception itself.

The previous Uranus-in-Gemini transit ran from 1941 to 1949. The invention of the transistor. The beginning of the computing era. In 1972, two physicists at the Stanford Research Institute accepted a contract from the American military to investigate something the intelligence community had reason to take seriously - the possibility that trained human beings could perceive information at a distance without any known sensory mechanism. The physicists were Russell Targ and Hal Puthoff. The first subject was an artist and psychic named Ingo Swann. The program that grew from that meeting was eventually named Stargate. It ran for twenty-three years. It was terminated in 1995, but this was not because results failed to appear.

The basic protocol was simple and precisely controlled. A remote viewer – seated in a shielded room with an experimenter, no external information available – was asked to describe a target location being visited at that moment by another team member, called the outbounder, who had been sent to a randomly selected site from a sealed pool. The viewer, having no knowledge of which site had been selected, would then describe what they perceived. Independent judges, blind to which viewer had been assigned which target, compared the transcripts to photographs of the actual sites and ranked the matches.

In the controlled SRI trials, the match rates were significantly above chance. Not slightly, and not in a single study, but across hundreds of trials with multiple viewers over years of work. Targ and Puthoff published their initial findings in Nature in 1974 – one of the most scrutinized peer-reviewed journals in science – and the paper passed peer review, a fact that was not well publicized afterward.

Ingo Swann was, by the assessment of the program researchers, the most consistently accurate viewer they worked with. In 1973, he proposed a methodological refinement called coordinate remote viewing – using geographic coordinates as the target – because it removed the possibility that outbounder body language or micro-expressions were providing unconscious information transfer. The protocol became the foundation of the training program. Joseph McMoneagle, who entered the program in 1978 as Army Intelligence operative #001, described coordinates and produced sketches of locations that matched satellite photography. Puthoff described the work as “an embarrassment of riches.”

The program was reviewed repeatedly, by the American Institutes for Research, by Congress, and by the military’s own analytical teams. The 1995 review by statistician Jessica Utts at the University of California Davis concluded that the effect was real and replicable. Her co-reviewer, Ray Hyman, a skeptic, agreed that the methodology was sound and could not identify a procedural explanation for the results. He recommended more research rather than acceptance. The program was terminated anyway, with the official conclusion that the results, while statistically significant, had not proven “operational usefulness.”

Twenty-three years. Hundreds of trials. Statistically significant results reviewed and confirmed by independent researchers. Operational deployment in intelligence contexts the full scope of which remains classified. Terminated not because it didn’t work but because the results created a bureaucratic problem that was easier to disavow than to address.

Here is a number worth sitting with. Molecular biologists have mapped the human genome. Of the roughly three billion base pairs in a strand of human DNA, the sequences that code for proteins – the parts that do the identifiable work of constructing the organism – account for approximately three percent of the total. The remaining ninety-seven percent was named, in an act of scientific confidence that is now quietly embarrassing, “junk DNA.” Its function was classified as unknown, which in practice meant: probably not important.

That designation has not aged well.

The junk contains palindromes – sequences that read the same forward and backward, which is a feature of language, not garbage. It contains sequences repeated hundreds of thousands of times with no apparent random variation, which is a feature of signal architecture, not noise. It contains what biophysicist Fritz-Albert Popp at the University of Kaiserslautern spent decades measuring: biophotonic emissions. Coherent light. Produced by the DNA itself, absorbed by the DNA itself, structured in patterns consistent with a communication system operating at speeds and bandwidths the biochemical layer cannot match. Popp called it the organism’s internal light field. He published the work. It replicated. It is not in your textbooks.

Jeremy Narby was a Stanford-trained anthropologist who spent two years in the Peruvian Amazon studying Ashaninca resource use. He kept encountering the same claim from experienced plant medicine practitioners: the detailed pharmacological knowledge of the forest, accumulated across generations with no trial-and-error record, was not discovered. The altered state, in Narby’s framework, is not a departure from accurate perception. It is a shift into the bandwidth the ninety-seven percent is broadcasting on. The ninety-seven percent may be doing something the current vocabulary doesn’t have a category for yet – which is not the same as nothing.
